Meta Settles Child Safety Case for $16.68 Billion. Shares Popped, Then Didn't.
Meta agreed to pay $16.68 billion to settle claims from 29 states that it designed Instagram and Facebook to be addictive to kids. No admission of wrongdoing β the standard price for making a very expensive problem go away without saying you caused it.
The settlement caps a liability Metaβs own legal team reportedly modeled as high as $1.4 trillion in a worst-case verdict. Against that number, $16.68 billion is a rounding error with a bow on it.
π Shares rose more than 4% premarket on the news. Then investors did the math on what β$16.68 billion, no admissionβ actually buys, and gave most of it back before lunch.
Terms include daily time caps, age verification, and parental controls β the features that were technically possible the entire time.
